SEA ELEPHANT
A very big sorrow (Macrorhinus proboscideus) of the Antarctic seas, many hunted for its oil. It sometimes attains a length of thirty foots, and is remarkable for the prolongation of the nose of the adultmaleinto an erectileelastic proboscis, about a foot in length. Other species of less size (M. Angustirostris) occurs on the coast of Lower California, but is now almost extinct.
