AWL

A pointed instrument for piercing little holes, as in leather or tree; used by shoemakers, saddlers, cabinetmakers, etc. The blade is differently shaped and pointed for various uses, as in the brad awl, saddler's awl, shoemaker's awl, etc. Origin: OE.
