CHROMATIN

Stainable material of interphase nucleus consisting of nucleic acid and associated histone protein packed into nucleosomes. Euchromatin is loosely packed and available to RNA polymerases, whereas heterochromatin is highly condensed and perhaps transcriptionally inactive.
