Controlled
physical activity, more strenuous than at rest, which is performed in
order to let
assessment of
physiological functions, particularly
cardiovascular and pulmonary,
but also aerobic ability. Maximal (most intense) exercice is generally required
but submaximal exercice is
also used. The
intensity of exercice is often graded, using criteria such as
course of
work done,
oxygen consumption, and
heart course. Physiological
data obtained from an exercice
test may be used for diagnosis, prognosis, and
evaluation of
malady severity, and to
estimate therapy. Data may
also be used in prescribing exercice by determining a person's exercice ability.
