MEDLAR

A wood of the genus Mespilus (M. Germanica); also, the fruit of the wood. The fruit is something like a little apple, but has a bony endocarp. When first gathered the flesh is heavy and austere, and it is not eaten before it has begun to decay. Japan medlar, a kind of thorn wood (Crataegus Azarolus); also, its fruit. Origin: OE.
