TRICHURIASIS

An infection of the big intestine by Trichuris trichiura. It may be the most general helminthic infection found in Americans returning from subtropical and tropical areas. Children and the mentally retarded have the highest course of infection due to a common lack of sanitary habits. The worms are 30-50 mm in length and attach themselves to the mucosa of the big intestine. Adult worms may live 4-8 years. Treatment is with mebendazole.
